Charlottetown, PE – Wednesday evening was a night of celebration for the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce at the 11th annual President’s Excellence Awards. Sponsored by Atlantic Lottery, the awards night honoured finalists in eight categories: Not-for-Profit Excellence, Export Excellence, Retail Excellence, Workplace Excellence, Volunteer of the Year, Emerging Business, Entrepreneur of the Year, and Excellence in Business. An independent panel of judges chose the finalists from over 60 nominees who were selected by their peers.
The winner of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Business Award for 2016 was Cows Inc. President and CEO Jackie MacIntyre accepted the award, which recognizes excellence in all areas of business operations. COWS began to make ice cream in 1983 with an old-fashioned recipe that originated in Cavendish. The same original ingredients still go into their current thirty-two plus flavors. COWS expanded into merchandise including their signature COWS T-shirts featuring pop culture cow puns that have become popular PEI souvenirs. COWS has received many accolades, including being named number 1 in the “World’s Top Ten Places for Ice Cream” by Tauck World Discovery. Other finalists in this award category included Andrews Hockey Growth Programs and Red Island Hospitality
Ray Murphy was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Ray Murphy’s long-term success, continued pursuit of business excellence and community involvement was recognized with the award of Entrepreneur of the Year.
The Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Sandy Gillis. Mr. Gillis has provided incredible commitment to Chamber programs and events for just over a decade including lending creative support, hosting, and coordination to a number of the Chamber’s signature events.
The Not-for-Profit Excellence Award recognizes the accomplishments of organizations in the not-for profit sector, which contribute to the economic, social and/or cultural well-being of the greater Charlottetown area. The award was presented to Hospice Palliative Care Association of Prince Edward Island. Finalists included Boys and Girls Club of Charlottetown and Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Receiving the Excellence in Export Award was DME Group. The award recognizes a business demonstrating growth in sales of their product and/or service to markets outside of the province. Runners up included ADL and PEI Mussel King.
In recognition of their innovative human resource practices, and a positive, healthy and productive workplace, Murphy Hospitality Group was presented the Workplace Excellence Award. Finalists included 3 Points Aviation and Cook Insurance Group.
The Excellence in Retail Award went to Moonsnail Ltd for its strong commitment to outstanding service, customer loyalty and community involvement. Finalists in this category included Canadian Tire Charlottetown and Village Pottery.
The Emerging Business Excellence Award is given to a business that has demonstrated remarkable growth, innovation and leadership in their industry sector. Upstreet Craft Brewing was the winner of the Emerging Business Excellence Award. Runners up included High Valley Plumbing and Heating and Dave’s Lobster.
The President’s Excellence Awards are held annually by the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce in celebration of excellence in the local business community.
