The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it will honour successful technology entrepreneur, Jamie Hill with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the 2017 President’s Excellence Awards on November 15th. Sponsored by Provincial Credit Union, this award recognizes the accomplishments and the entrepreneurial spirit of an individual in our community. Individuals were nominated by Chamber members, and the Chamber’s Executive Committee selects the winner.
Ever the entrepreneur and risk taker, Jamie Hill started a call centre business before the need was obvious to most in the technology sector. In 1985, he cofounded On-Line Support (OLS), a consulting firm specializing in information technology. Over the next 8 years, the company grew to 20 consultants completing projects in the Maritimes and Ontario. From 1998 to 2000, OLS continued to grow to more than 430 employees. In 2000, Jamie divested his majority share of OLS but remained on the board of directors, seeing operations grow to nine locations in PEI, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.
For over 20 years, the internet and its associated opportunities drove much of Jamie’s success. In 1993, Jamie founded PEINet in cooperation with Island Tel (Bell Aliant). As President of PEINet, Jamie led the company to become the first provider of internet services, data communications, and network management in the province. His experience with PEINet led Jamie to form Cycor Communications, a national internet services provider carrying the distinction of being the first to provide local service in every province in Canada.
In March of 2001, Jamie made an equity investment in a publicly held company called iWave Information Systems and soon obtained controlling interest. IWave’s primary business is the research, development, and manufacturing of an online prospect research database to aid non-profits in their major gift fundraising efforts. Jamie took on the responsibilities of chief executive officer and president in a management restructure. From 2005, the company grew to more than 40 employees, demonstrated annual double-digit growth, and served customers in five countries. In June 2017, iWave was sold to a group of investors led by a firm based in California.
Jamie is a graduate of Holland College’s Programmer Analyst program. Today, he holds interests in real estate development and continues to support and invest in IT start-up companies. Jamie has generously supported and volunteered with various Island charities including Special Olympics PEI, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Children’s Wish Foundation, IWK, and the Holland College Foundation.
“Jamie’s ability to see the shape of the future led him to invest in information technology opportunities at an early stage, often taking significant financial risk in order to succeed,” said Rory Francis, President of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce. “With this award, the Chamber is pleased to celebrate Jamie as a pioneer in the IT sector in PEI and an accomplished entrepreneur.”
The President’s Excellence Awards, sponsored by Atlantic Lottery, takes place Wednesday, November 15th from 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at the Delta Prince Edward. The Chamber holds the event each year to recognize business excellence in our community. Tickets are available online at www.charlottetownchamber.com, or through the Chamber office at 902-628-2000.
