Chamber member Lori Mayne recently celebrated the launch of a new book that shares the story of one of P.E.I.’s most remarkable entrepreneurs. Owen Connolly: The Making of a Legacy, written by Leonard Cusack, tells the rags-to-riches tale of a poor Irish immigrant who came to the Island in 1839 and rose to become one of its wealthiest citizens. Lori worked as researcher for the project and edited the first manuscript. Over his career, Connolly operated stores in Charlottetown, Souris, Cardigan and Montague. He also became a successful importer-exporter, banker, and real estate owner. When he died in 1887, he left almost his entire fortune to education. The Connolly Estate has since distributed approximately $3 million to help thousands of Island students of Irish Catholic heritage attend post-secondary education. Owen Connolly: The Making of a Legacy, published by Island Studies Press and the Connolly Estate, is available at local bookstores.
