Two years after celebrating its ten- year anniversary, and one year since the launch of a new strategy for bioscience cluster development, the Prince Edward Island BioAlliance and partners are making more strides, as they mark Global Biotechnology Week 2017, September 20 -27th.
Since 2006, the Province of Prince Edward Island has officially marked the annual event by issuing a formal declaration and participating in industry activities. Since that time, the number of companies in PEI has grown from a dozen to now over 50 and employees working within the industry has tripled to more than 1,500.
The Province of Prince Edward Island has identified the biotechnology industry as one of the pillars driving our economy.
“The PEI Bioscience industry has become one of our leading sectors in export sales and is creating exciting employment opportunities that support our population growth strategy objectives of recruitment, repatriation, and youth employment,” said PEI Premier Wade MacLauchlan. “We are pleased with the successes that we’ve seen and look forward to continued growth in this area.”
Providing key incubation and accelerator services for emerging companies to succeed is a priority for the BioAlliance. So too is growing the industry’s local talent pool, attracting more high-quality business opportunities to PEI, and increasing national and international recognition of the province’s bioscience sector.
However, success does come with its consequences, says Dr. Russ Kerr, Chair of the PEI BioAlliance.
“Our challenge now is that we have run out of the specialized manufacturing and lab facilities necessary to house the pipeline of new businesses coming into the province. We are working hard with our partners to address this bottleneck to growth. Collaboration between industry, government, and academic partners, is what sets PEI aside from other jurisdictions and is what is driving the success of the biotechnology industry in Prince Edward Island,” said Kerr.
As part of the week-long celebrations, there will be company expansion announcements, open houses and scientific poster sessions, national award presentations to PEI recipients, emerging company presentations, and networking events for industry.
BIOTECanada, Canada’s leading national organization for biotechnology will be in PEI on September 21st for an open house to showcase new facility expansions at BioVectra Inc. and to present National Gold Leaf Awards to two PEI recipients.
