Tip-to-Tip & Nose-to-Tail
Caring for all animals in need across P.E.I.
The PEI Humane Society (PEIHS) asks Islanders to give generously, to help the local shelter reach its annual fundraising campaign goal of $65,000.
In the past year, PEIHS has cared for over 1200 Island animals in need. Each year, the shelter requires nearly $800,000 in operating costs. The dedicated team of PEIHS Animal Protection Officers drive over 65,000 kms to rescue stray animals, investigate animal welfare reports, and transport animals in need of veterinary care. From tip-to-tip and nose-to-tail, PEIHS provides shelter and care, ensuring safety for homeless companion animals across Prince Edward Island.
This year’s campaign features the happy adoption story of Dr. Pickering and Skinny.
He was lost, abused, and abandoned, but was lucky to get a second chance
Skinny the Shih-Tzu was found wandering the roads late at night. He was in such poor health, our Animal Protection Officer took Skinny directly to the Atlantic Veterinary College. They determined he had chronic dry eyes and conjunctivitis, severe bacterial and fungal skin and ear infections, fleas, hair loss and possible vision loss. Even in such devastating condition, Skinny was quiet but friendly. Dr. Kristi Pickering, the attending veterinarian, fell in love with him that night. After a stay at the PEI Humane Society, and no owner coming forward, she adopted Skinny. Skinny was not a simple adoption, even for an experienced veterinarian. He continued to need extensive and expensive vet care and frequent consultation with a dermatologist off-Island. Dr. Pickering admits it was a hard battle to bring him back to health, but she did not once second-guess her decision to bring this little dog into her family. Skinny is at last in the home he deserves.
