Q&A with Foulkes Productions
What’s your favourite hidden gem on PEI?
There are still a handful of local general stores that continue to provide that special PEI hospitality and service. I simply “feel like an Islander” when I walk into one. These establishments are at the heart of their communities.
What do you love most about running your business?
I do enjoy the freedom & flexibility of being an entrepreneur. It is great when I see a way to make things better within my business, I have the freedom to implement changes immediately.
What’s been one of your biggest challenges, and how did you get through it?
Just last month, at 55, I was diagnosed with ADHD. I had no idea I’d been living with a “neuro-spicy” brain, and the anxiety that comes with it. It eventually led to burnout during my busiest season. Recovery has been tough, but with the right supports, many found through my Chamber connections, I know I’ll get through it. This experience has truly opened my eyes to the value of Chamber benefits.
What’s something your customers might not know about you or your business?
To the NHL history buffs: How many times has the Stanley Cup been to PEI? Did you count 2008? Led by Summerside’s Adam Bourque, I was the video producer on the winning team that brought the Stanley Cup to PEI. Our video in the “Bring Home the Stanley Cup” contest won first place.
What does “community” mean to you, and how do you stay connected?
A community is a group of people, who through a common history are able to build each other up to become stronger. A healthy community is always welcoming to new members, creating a richer history to move forward.
Who inspires you in your work/life?
I have been fortunate over the past 20-years to have had the opportunity to produce profile videos for JA’s PEI Business Hall of Fame. One of my favourite quotes comes from the late Walter J. Reihl. He said, “We are not all as busy as we think we are.”
If you had one extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
If the rest of the world stops while I get to enjoy my “extra hour”, I would secretly practise my golf game.
What are you looking forward to in the next year?
When I started the business 20 years ago, the goal was to help PEI families and businesses preserve their histories through video. I’m now reviving that dream and excited to grow this side of Foulkes Productions, stay tuned for more in the coming year!
If you could eat one PEI dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bar clam chowder and sourdough biscuits with PEIBC Blueberry Ale, and ADL Island Fantasy ice cream for dessert. OK, now I’m hungry.
