The Gold Cup Parade Committee is dedicated to bringing PEI’s most beloved annual tradition to life. Every year, before sunrise on parade morning, lawn chairs line the streets in eager anticipation. Just a few hours later, those same streets are filled with thousands of excited spectators, ready to celebrate what has become known as PEI’s Favourite Day of the Year!

Over the past 25 years, PEI has experienced significant population growth and increasing diversity. Today, that diversity is reflected throughout the Gold Cup Parade—from the spectators lining the route to the vibrant float entries representing cultures from all over the world. The committee is proud to create an event that unites and celebrates our entire community.

Q&A with Jennifer Evans, Gold Cup Parade Committee

1. What’s your favourite hidden gem on PEI? Too many to pick a favourite!  Living and working in the capital city offers diverse culinary and cultural experiences and you’re only a 15-minute drive from one of PEI’s amazing beaches!

 

2. How have you seen the Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce grow and evolve during your 25+ years as a member? The Chamber has been an important partner of the Gold Cup Parade. From the office above Tim Hortons on Kent Street with just two employees to the Chamber Team today that represents the 1000 plus members, the Chamber remains the voice of business for the Greater Charlottetown Area.

 

3. If you could only eat one PEI dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?  A PEI Lobster Roll with a side of PEI potato salad!

4. What have you appreciated the most about being a Chamber member over the years?  Membership in the Chamber provides networking, advocacy and a united voice.

 

5. Can you share a memorable PEI moment from your time running your business here? Every year on the morning of the Gold Cup Parade, we see so many lawn chairs set up and lining the Parade route before sunrise.  Then just a few hours later as we get set to start the Parade those chairs and the streets are filled with thousands of happy people that are so excited to watch the Parade.  The excitement and anticipation on Parade morning is very special.  It’s PEI’s Favourite Day of the Year!

 

6. How do you think the Chamber has influenced local businesses and the community during your membership?  There have been some significant economic challenges for business over the last 25 years and the Chamber has always taken a leadership role during these difficult times to ensure all business has a voice.

 

7. What’s one thing about PEI you think people often overlook or don’t appreciate enough? Our size is one of our biggest strengths. Strong connections and close-knit networks allow for frequent collaboration, with Island businesses and residents always willing to step up and support each other.

 

8. Looking back, what major changes in the business climate on PEI stand out to you?  Over the last 25 years we have seen significant population growth and diversity of our population.  We see the diversity represented today in our Gold Cup Parade from spectators to  float entries we are fortunate to have participation from so many different cultures.

 

9. What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy the Island’s natural beauty? A walk on the beach or Victoria Park boardwalk.

 

10. What advice would you give to newer businesses on PEI?  Join the Chamber!  You will have an instant network and become part of a business community that represents over 1000 members.  There is always strength in numbers.
