The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes today’s announcements advancing regional energy collaboration, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, as well as a federal investment of $5.9 million to advance the PEI–New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion Project.
The MOU commits the three Maritime provinces to work together on a regional electricity roadmap, explore opportunities for greater coordination across electricity generation and transmission, and examine ways to strengthen the region’s electricity system to meet growing demand.
Building on this commitment, the federal investment will support the planning and design of two new undersea transmission cables between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, along with upgrades to transmission infrastructure and substations in both PEI and New Brunswick. Once complete, the project is expected to strengthen grid reliability, increase transmission capacity, and help meet the region’s future electricity needs.

Regional energy collaboration has been a key advocacy priority for the Chamber since this winter. This spring, our Chamber brought forward a policy resolution through the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce that was adopted by chambers across Atlantic Canada. The resolution called for greater regional collaboration to improve energy reliability, resiliency, and long-term capacity while supporting economic growth across the region. We were pleased to recently meet with the Province to discuss these priorities, and we look forward to continuing to advocate alongside our Atlantic partners to ensure these commitments result in meaningful action.
