Lucas and David Arsenault.
Arsenault Bros. Construction Ltd

Family is a core value for many Islanders, so it’s no surprise that we see so many family businesses thriving on PEI

Arsenault Bros. Construction Ltd is one of those thriving businesses! Carl and Anne Marie Arsenault of St. Nichols, PEI started the business in 1983 and operated it together for over three decades before handing the reins to their sons Lucas and David Arsenault.

Lucas and David certainly seem to have inherited their parent’s entrepreneurial spirit. They both worked for the family business, learning the ropes at a young age, before heading off to university. Afterward, they both pursued other job opportunities; Lucas moved out west and David received his accounting designation while working in finance at the Government of Canada. Always in the back of their minds was the family business and the new directions they could take it in.

Together, the brother duo has been expanding the company and branching out to new businesses. They now have operations in every Atlantic province, own a property development company called Arsenault Properties, and in January 2020, they bought Top to Floors in Charlottetown. While Lucas is primarily in charge of the construction side of the business, David looks after the property development and rentals and oversees Tops to Floors.

Even though Lucas and David have a lifetime of knowledge in the construction business, they still face many challenges. The industry is very hard to predict and control. Government regulations, labour shortages, fluctuating housing markets, and materials pricing all play a role in how business goes from year to year. Being the people who have to handle these issues and keep things running smoothly can sometimes be hard, but having a strong team and a supportive community definitely makes the bad times easier when they do come around.

The Arsenault brothers rely on great relationships with countless people in their community. Suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, and especially their employees, who they consider as family, make coming to work every day a positive experience.

“The construction industry on PEI is business, but it’s also community,” says David. “We’re dealing with people’s livelihoods and homes after all, so the community is supporting one another and rooting for each other to succeed”.

Building on that connection to the community is so important to them. They’re proud to use their resources to give back to their community by building affordable housing projects and providing quality, safe housing to people who need it most.

Lucas and David are carrying on their family legacy and surely making their parents proud.
