Charlottetown, PE (April 13, 2022) – Wednesday night was an evening of celebration for the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce as members of the Island business community gathered at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Prince Edward for the 2022 President’s Excellence Awards.

Sponsored by Atlantic Lottery, the Awards Gala honoured finalists and winners in ten categories: Emerging Business Excellence, Excellence in Small Business, Excellence in Business, Not-for-Profit Excellence, Excellence in Customer Service, Excellence in Collaboration, Innovation Excellence, Workplace Excellence, People’s Choice for Community Impact, and Entrepreneur of the Year. Over 80 business submissions were reviewed by an independent panel of judges to select the finalists and winners in each category.

The first award of the evening, the Emerging Business Excellence Award, was presented to Sunly Energy. Sponsored by the City of Charlottetown, this award is given to a for-profit business that has been operating for two to five years and has demonstrated remarkable growth, innovation, and leadership within their industry during the first years of operation. Flourish Development Group and Lone Oak Brewing Co were also recognized as finalists in this category.

The Excellence in Small Business Award, sponsored by McInnes Cooper, was awarded to Stepscan Technologies Inc. This award recognizes a business with fewer than 25 full-time employees that has demonstrated excellence in all areas of operations, embodies entrepreneurial spirit, and has a strong track record of community involvement and support. Other finalists in the category included Island Hill Farm and The Gray Group.

In recognition of a business with more than 25 full-time employees that has demonstrated excellence in business in all areas of operations, the Excellence in Business Award, sponsored by Scotiabank, was given to Meyer Housewares Canada. Fitzpatrick & Company, Chartered Professional Accountants, was the runner-up.

The Not-for-Profit Excellence Award, sponsored by iWave, was awarded to The Community Foundation of PEI. This award recognizes the accomplishments of an organization in the not-for-profit sector that contributes to the economic, social, and/or cultural well-being of the Greater Charlottetown Area. Other finalists included Hospice PEI and Special Olympics PEI.

Water Prince Corner Shop was the recipient of the Excellence in Customer Service Award, co-sponsored by BDO Canada and Cox & Palmer, for demonstrating a strong commitment to outstanding customer service, customer loyalty, community involvement, and innovation. Fix Auto Charlottetown and Symmetrics Health were also finalists in this category.

The Excellence in Collaboration Award, sponsored by the Confederation Centre of the Arts, recognizes a business that has displayed true Island spirit by forming a solid and dependable partnership with one or more uniquely owned businesses that together, deliver a successful and unique product or service offering. Out of the three finalists, At Your Service Creations and Fat Cat Bakery, Famous Peppers Inc. and The Lucky Bean Café, The Lucky Bean Café emerged as the winner.

The recipient of the Innovation Excellence Award, sponsored by BioVectra, was BioTraceIT. This award is presented to a business that has or is creating and implementing innovative programs, practises, partnerships, policies and activities that improve and generate new ideas, techniques, tools or solutions with practical applications. The runners-up in this category were the Canadian Police Knowledge Network and Deep Roots Distillery.

The Workplace Excellence Award is given to an organization that – through its commitment to staff development, work/life balance, fair employment practices, implementation of diversity and inclusion policies, and employee communications – provides an exceptional work environment resulting in high employee satisfaction and retention. Sekisui Diagnostics PEI was recognized as the winner of this award, sponsored by the Royal Bank of Canada. Charlottetown Mitsubishi and Nimrods’ Restaurants were also finalists.

By way of public vote, the People’s Choice for Community Impact Award, sponsored by MRSB, went to 4S Catering. This award recognizes a small, locally owned, and operated business that has earned an engaged and loyal following and support from the community. Other award finalists were Stewart Travel Group and Tremploy.

The 2022 Entrepreneur of the Year Award, sponsored by Provincial Credit Union, was presented to Gary Rayner of the Travel Store for his entrepreneurial spirit and four decades-worth of contributions to PEI’s travel industry.

The President’s Excellence Awards are held annually by the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce to honour and celebrate excellence within the local business community.
