Dear Members & Friends,
The U.S. government has announced a one-month delay for tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada that are covered by CUSMA (the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement).
This exemption will expire on April 2, the same date the U.S. President has threatened to impose global reciprocal tariffs.
This delay gives businesses a short window to adjust, but uncertainty remains, and such constant uncertainty is never good for business. As the Canadian Chamber stated, the economy is not a toy to play with. Our Chamber will continue to advocate for reliable and free trade, diversified markets, and a strong, resilient PEI economy.
In response, the Government of Canada is suspending its second wave of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports, however, its initial set of retaliatory tariffs will continue.
The Province of PEI has recently launched two new programs to support businesses through marketing and export trade efforts, as well as loan assistance for operational needs.
We will continue to monitor developments and keep our membership informed.
