The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Government of Canada’s decision to extend the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 31, 2027.
The tax will return at 50% of its regular rate for February and March 2027 before being fully restored on April 1, 2027. While the tax is fully suspended, the measure provides relief of 10 cents per litre on gasoline and four cents per litre on diesel fuel.
“Fuel and transportation are major costs for many Island businesses, including those in trucking, agriculture, construction, tourism, and food production. This extension will help ease some of that pressure. The phased return of the tax will also give businesses greater predictability and more time to plan,” said Bianca McGregor, Chamber CEO.
“We hope this continued suspension will help reduce costs throughout the supply chain. For our small and medium-sized businesses operating on tight margins, even modest savings on fuel and delivery costs can make a difference.”
The Chamber had joined chambers across Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and PEI in calling on the federal government to extend the suspension, provide timely clarity for businesses and consumers, and consider making the relief permanent.
Earlier today, Sean Casey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, visited the Chamber office to share the news of the extension and meet with McGregor to discuss the importance of keeping costs down for Island businesses.
The Chamber will continue advocating for measures that reduce the cost of doing business, strengthen competitiveness, and support affordability for Island businesses and residents.
