Today, Chamber Board President Barb Smith sent a letter to all four Island Members of Parliament regarding the ongoing PEI potato export ban.
In the letter, the Chamber noted our concerns with the continued ban and what it means for the local economy. We encouraged our Island MPs to continue advocating for our Island potato growers and for government to employ the expertise of Global Affairs Canada to resolve this trade dispute as it is clear that the CFIA lacks the capacity to address this problem alone.
We also support the PEI Potato Board’s call for revisions to the existing Ministerial Order related to this issue, so that only impacted fields with discoveries of wart are impacted and the rest of the province can move forward. Further, we ask that the matter of compensation be revisited given that there remains potential for further destruction of potatoes.
