For over 25 years, Special Olympics PEI has been enriching the lives of Islanders with an intellectual disability through sport. As a long-standing not-for-profit in the community and a dedicated member of the Chamber, they have witnessed and contributed to the evolution of the local business landscape.
What’s your favourite hidden gem on PEI?
Greenwich National Park is hands down one of the most beautiful spots on the Island. The dunes, the boardwalk, the views—it’s just incredible. If you haven’t been, it’s a must-see.
How have you seen the Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce grow and evolve during your 25+ years as a member?
Over the years, the Chamber has really recognized the value of not-for-profits and the role we play in the community. There’s been a big shift toward building stronger connections between businesses and charitable organizations, which has opened up great opportunities for collaboration. The Chamber has also stepped up its advocacy efforts, making sure not-for-profits have a seat at the table when it comes to policy and economic discussions.
If you could only eat one PEI dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s an easy one – PEI seafood chowder. Fresh seafood, like lobster and mussels, PEI potatoes, and local butter and cream. How could you go wrong?
What have you appreciated the most about being a Chamber member over the years?
The connections. The Chamber has always been a great place to meet like-minded people, share ideas, and collaborate. Having a strong network makes all the difference, and we’ve been lucky to build relationships that have lasted for years.
Can you share a memorable PEI moment from your time running your business here?
One moment that stands out was seeing how the local community rallied around businesses during tough times. Whether it was during the pandemic or other challenges, the support from fellow business owners and the community was incredible. It reminded me why PEI is such a special place.
How do you think the Chamber has influenced local businesses and the community during your membership?
The Chamber has been a strong advocate for local businesses, always stepping up to support and represent the business community. Whether it’s pushing for better policies, providing resources, or creating opportunities for networking and collaboration, the Chamber has been a driving force in helping businesses adapt and grow.
What’s one thing about PEI you think people often overlook or don’t appreciate enough?
Our arts and culture scene. PEI is known for its beaches and seafood, but there’s so much creativity here—live music, theatre, and local artists. It’s a huge part of what makes the Island unique.
Looking back, what major changes in the business climate on PEI stand out to you?
The biggest change has been the shift to digital and the push for sustainability, which has impacted how businesses and not-for-profits connect and operate. We’ve had to adapt how we engage, fundraise, and deliver programs, but it’s also opened up new opportunities for partnerships and support.
What’s your go-to way to relax and enjoy the Island’s natural beauty?
A walk on the beach, hands down. Whether it’s early morning or at sunset, there’s nothing like the fresh air and the sound of the waves.
What advice would you give to newer businesses on PEI, based on the changes and growth you’ve witnessed?
Build strong relationships and stay adaptable. PEI is a place where community matters, so get involved, support others, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Things change fast, but if you stay connected and open to new ideas, you’ll do well.
