PEI School Food Program Inc., the non-profit organization responsible for the successful development and delivery of the provincial school lunch program in public schools across Prince Edward Island is now a registered charity organization!
Our mission is to cultivate a healthy and inclusive food culture in island schools. Our program provides all Island students K-12 with access to a healthy, affordable lunch option five days a week. We offer a “Pay What You Can” payment model which provides equitable access to families regardless of their financial situation. The PEI School Food Program encourages families and students to pay for their meals if they are able to, to help those who are not.
Last school year, we served over 600 thousand healthy and affordable meals to almost 9,500 students across PEI. This school year we have seen a 44% increase in meal volumes. Although we are excited about the increased participation in our program, more families are unable to pay for their student’s lunches. According to recent data from PROOF, more than 35% of PEI children live in a food-insecure household.
Although our program will not solve food insecurity in the province as a whole, we can alleviate family budgets by ensuring that all students have access to a healthy and adorable lunch at school, to support growth and learning.
