Event Atlantic, an event hosting membership-based organization, recently awarded the Prince Edward Island Marathon the “2022 Event of the Year $100k-$500K” at their recent Excellence Awards presentation during their Event Summit in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
This award is presented to an Atlantic Canadian event that exemplifies industry best practices in all aspects of its operation. The event stimulated the economy in the community, region, and province while providing a commitment to sustainability practices and initiatives. The event provided inclusivity arrangement and provided attendees with high standard of satisfaction.
The 2022 Prince Edward Island Marathon marked the 18th year of operation and presented race organizers with significant challenges to overcome in the aftermath of post tropical storm Fiona.
“Our full marathon route was devastated by Fiona 3 weeks before race day.” said Myrtle Jenkins-Smith, Race Director. “It was an all-hands-on deck approach by the board, staff and volunteers to reorganize the event, including the arduous task of re-certifying the new route for our marathon to be recognized as a Boston Qualifier race. We are so excited to receive this award, it means the world to our organization.”
“Staff took on the daunting task of forging ahead with the 2022 event in the aftermath of Fiona with vigor, says Cheryl Paynter, Board of Directors Chair. This is not the first time our event was challenged, having been one of the first events to return in 2021 after the height of COVID. We are so pleased for staff to be recognized for the extra efforts and professionalism in event management. We would like to thank our event sponsors, participants, volunteers and especially our staff for their leadership in continuing to make the Prince Edward Island Marathon weekend a treasured annual event for PEI.”
