On October 5th, Penny Walsh McGuire, Executive Director of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce spoke as a witness to the Standing Committee on Government Operations & Estimates on the future of Canada Post.
Initial observations from the Chamber were that transition and adaptation by Canada Post Corporation are inevitable. At the same time, The Chamber emphasized the importance of considering the needs of business, the largest users of Canada Post, when reviewing the corporation’s operations and services and adapting to the digital age.
The Chamber recommended Canada Post’s deliberations be guided by the two following principles, specifically:
1) the Committee should continue to consider the importance of a public postal service to Canadians, and particularly small business; and
2) the Committee must make decisions regarding the future of Canada Post that are based on sound fiscal management.
